I’m 30 years old and I have been passing my 20s studying history, Portuguese language and briefly linguistics at the universities of Mainz and Porto, doing an office job for the municipal utilities of Mainz, helping a bit at the cash of a museum and doing internships at the local museum and the municipal archives of Ingelheim, where Charlemagne had one of his imperial palaces.

Currently I’m also trying to develop skills especially as a lyricist whilst trying a bit to figure out music production. This year I could breathe Eurovision air for the first time as I assisted, alongside fellow HCSC veterans Rogério Afonso, Alfonso Daniel and Filipe Ramos, the production of Portuguese singer Beatriz Gouveia’s song “Your voice / La tua voce” (also called “The voice” and “A voz”) that made it into one of the televised semi-finals of “Una voce per San Marino” which turned out to be a qualification of unknown or lesser known singers and bands for the “San Marino Song Contest” that was eventually won by Eiffel 65 legend Gabry Ponte with “Tutta l’Italia”.

My song “Slovenly” is about the wish to escape from a glittering world to a simpler one after realizing not to feel at home in a luxurious world one was actually aspiring for. I pretty much enjoy staying at a fancy boutique hotel or going once in a while to a restaurant that is a little costlier but I do have a soft spot on seemingly dilapidated places, such as old-fashioned and seedy bars and pubs frequented by people that are extremely different to me, such as the mentioned “gothic girls in inexpensive jackets with jewellery and pearls”. The song is actually inspired by a bar where such kind of people can be found, “Bar Labirintho”, a sleazy basement dive in Porto that is known to have hosted music events with some artists who went on to become well-known at least in Portugal.

Lyrics

Champagne worth a fortune and emerald green lights
In a million dollar clothing at big city nights
This is the big dream, this is the perfect illusion
Illusion, illusion, illusion

But it can turn out as a world of plastic shallowness
Show me a shabby world where everything is a mess
It isn’t necessarily worse when it’s cheap
It’s not that deep, it’s not that deep, it’s not that deep

Take me to a place no one aspires to
Lead me into a world where everything is true
No more fake, I want it unmistakably
Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly

Let’s condescend ourselves down to dissoluteness
In a dark and shabby world where everything’s a mess
I want it real, I want it unmistakably
Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly

You and me down in a sleazy basement dive
This is the place where my vivacious soul can thrive
It looks like hell here but for me it’s heavenly
Heavenly, heavenly, heavenly

Ragged and grumpy elderlies and gothic girls
in inexpensive jackets with jewellery and pearls
This is the real and unfiltered world, it’s not that deep
It’s not that deep, it’s not that deep, it’s not that deep

Take me to a place no one aspires to
Lead me into a world where everything is true
No more fake, I want it unmistakably
Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly

Let’s condescend ourselves down to dissoluteness
In a dark and shabby world where everything’s a mess
I want it real, I want it unmistakably
Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly

Take me to a place no one aspires to
Lead me into a world where everything is true
No more fake, I want it unmistakably
Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly

Let’s condescend ourselves down to dissoluteness
In a dark and shabby world where everything’s a mess
I want it real, I want it unmistakably
Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly

Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly
Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly
Slovenly, slovenly, slovenly
