I’m a middle-aged language history student enjoying the process of song creation, from first ideas to final weird reality. The creation gives me peace of mind and enough energy to do everything else that I need to do. I’ve taken part in HCSC loads of times since 2004, but I tend to finish at the bottom (and I don’t mind either).
Last year I tried (for the first time) to write lyrics in Welsh to a full concept album (13 tracks), taking the listener through 24 hours of a person’s daily life. The words sort of gave me musical ideas almost instantly, so the music was composed in the late Summer and through the Autumn. With the writing process out of the way I was able to start recording stuff in March, and I had some kind of semi-finished demo versions in early May. I tend to like the stuff I make (like, not love… 🙂 ), but listening to the full demo album on my stereo for the first time I felt that ”Wow – this is almost as good as the CDs I buy and listen to (using the same stereo)”. This was new to me, and I don’t expect it to happen anytime again soon!
The songs of the album vary according to the mind of the person, so some are quite dark and mellow while others are fast, heavy, spirited or thoughtful. Most of them work where they are on the album, but not when run on their own. Some of the others are simply too complex to understand (well, I like complex songs). But the song about the person not wanting to get out of bed in the morning is somewhat ”easier” to listen to (not easy, though!), so I’ll give it a chance at the HCSC as a way of showing that the Welsh language is alive and that it’s possible to use the language in rock songs. The language of Heaven can be used for everything!.
